What is a Release Liner?
A release liner is a carrier material—typically paper or film—coated with a release agent (usually silicone) that carriers and protects sticky substances until they are ready to be ‘released’ for their next intended purpose.
The purpose of a release liner is to protect sticky substances, often adhesives, from contamination, moisture, and premature bonding while allowing easy release upon application.
Release liners are composed of a substrate (base material) and a coating. Common substrates include glassine paper, super calendered kraft paper, clay coated paper or polymers like PET, PP, HDPE, and LDPE. The substrate has a release coating, primarily silicone, which ensures a smooth release from adhesive surfaces. Release liners can have non-silicone release coatings, or no coating at all. Release coatings can be on one side the release liner (S1S) or on both sides of the substrate (S2S). Release liners are available in a wide variety of thicknesses and strengths.

What types of films are available for release liners?
Release liners are constructed of several base film substrates – each with its own performance characteristics. Release liners are not one-size-fits-all products. Identifying what film substrate is most appropriate for your release liner application is best determined by working with an experienced Fox River Associates representative who will work with you to understand your specific needs.
Fox River Associates offers a full breadth of film release liner substrates, including Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE), High Density Polyethylene (HDPE), Polyester (PET), Polypropylene (PP), and Specialty Films like Flat LDPE (no release coating) and Embossed LDPE (no release coating).
Film release liners from Fox River Associates are available coated on one side with release coating or on two sides. Two sided release coatings can be equal or differential.

What Types of Papers Are Available for Release Liners?
Release liners are constructed of several base paper substrates – each with its own performance characteristics. Release liners are not one-size-fits-all products. Identifying what paper substrate is most appropriate for your release liner application is best determined by working with an experienced Fox River Associates representative who will work with you to understand your specific needs.
Fox River Associates offers a full breadth of paper release liner substrates.
Direct Coated Papers – Glassine and Super Calendared Kraft (SCK). These papers are high in strength and can be coated on one side or on two sides for versatility in many market applications. These papers can be coated with a differential release, resulting in a “tight” and “easy” release on the same substrate. These are mainstay substrates for paper release liners.
Clay Coated Kraft – these kraft papers have an extra layer of clay coating delivering excellent layflat and dimensional stability. These paper release liners are less reactive to moisture and temperature than other available substrates. The consistent surface and smoothness of these clay coated papers make them excellent base substrates for release coating for paper release liners.
Poly Coated Kraft – the poly coating provides enhanced moisture resistance. These liners are durable and highly resistant to tearing. They can also provide a very smooth surface to the coated adhesive
Specialty papers: machine finished, machine glazed, and machine calendared papers are specialty substrates that may be found in paper release liner applications that require performance characteristics outside the standard papers used for release liners.
