Release Coating Compatibility in Medical Applications

Today’s medical device industry uses proven long-standing technology products and highly sophisticated advanced technology products. Many of these medical devices involve skin contact and medical grade adhesives. Developments in these areas necessitate the highest quality raw materials, including specialized adhesives, release substrates and release coatings in release paper and release film liners.

Silicone adhesives are often the preferred adhesive for many medical applications because they deliver the appropriate adhesion with gentle removal. Throughout the device’s application, therapeutic wear and removal, the adhesive must ensure that the device stays in place and does not damage the skin. Developments in silicone pressure-sensitive adhesives for geriatric, neonatal and other fragile skin care applications have enhanced patient comfort, extended wear time, and minimized the risk of damage upon removal.

When using a silicone adhesive, it is imperative to choose the right release liner. Traditional silicone coatings will not properly release from and may potentially lock up with these silicone adhesives. Additionally, higher temperatures are needed to cure these adhesives, and targeted release liner substrates are required for these processing conditions.

Fluoro release systems coated on polyester film release liner substrates are the most commonly offered and most compatible release systems available today for use with silicone adhesives. Additionally, new non-coated release films are being offered and should be considered for applicability. Fox River Associates is experienced at working with our partners to define and application and needs for the release liner and help identify/recommend the correct engineered release paper or release film liner.

Fox River Associates specializes in providing the right combination of substrate and release coating to meet your demands for medical application. Transdermal drug delivery (TDDS), medical tapes, surgical drapes, wound care, ostomy, electrodes, or biomedical devices – whatever your application, our team is ready to help.
