In construction and building product manufacturing, seemingly small material choices can have a major impact on how a finished component performs during fabrication, handling, installation, and final use. Release liners are one of those materials. They may not be visible once a product is installed, but their release characteristics, strength, surface properties, and compatibility with adhesive systems can influence the production and application process.
At Fox River Associates, we work with work with building and construction manufacturers who need that need dependable release liner solutions for demanding applications. In this case study, a building component manufacturer approached us with a release liner challenge involving an adhesive-backed component used within a construction-related product.
The Initial Concern: A Release Liner That Was Difficult to Remove Consistently
The converter was producing an adhesive-backed component that needed to remain protected throughout manufacturing, packaging, shipping, and handling. The release liner had to stay securely attached during those stages, but it also needed to remove in a controlled manner during installation.
Their existing release liner created a problem. The required peel force was higher than the customer wanted, making the release liner more difficult to remove during the final application process. In some instances, the added pulling force placed unnecessary stress on the adhesive layer and the construction component itself.
The customer was not looking to redesign the entire product. Instead, they wanted to determine whether a different release liner construction could provide a more manageable release while still meeting the physical demands of their manufacturing and handling environment.
Several factors had to be considered:
- The release liner needed to remain secure during converting and packaging.
- The release liner had to tolerate normal handling throughout the customer’s process.
- The release level needed to be reduced without creating premature separation.
- The release liner had to work with the existing adhesive system.
- The material needed suitable strength and dimensional stability for the customer’s production equipment.
This type of request is a good example of why release liner selection should consider the complete process rather than a single specification.

Our Recommendation as the Release Liner Supplier
After reviewing the company’s requirements, Fox River Associates focused on the interaction between the adhesive and the release coating.
The existing release liner provided higher release resistance release resistance than the application required. Our recommendation was to evaluate an alternative release liner with a more suitable release level while maintaining the physical properties needed for converting and handling.
We also reviewed the release liner substrate because release performance is only one part of the equation. A release liner can have an appropriate release coating but still create problems if the substrate does not provide the caliper, stiffness, strength, or dimensional characteristics required by the application.
Our suggested release liner construction was intended to create a better balance between secure protection and controlled removal.
The proposed release liner offered several potential advantages:
- A more manageable peel during installation.
- Reduced stress on the adhesive layer during release liner removal.
- Reliable protection during manufacturing and transportation.
- Physical properties suited to the converting process.
- More consistent handling for personnel working with the finished component.
Before making a final change, samples were provided so the converter could evaluate the release liner under actual production and application conditions. This allowed them to compare the new release liner against the existing material using the same adhesive, equipment, and handling methods.
Testing the Appropriate Release Liner
Testing was important because release liner performance cannot always be predicted from a data sheet alone. Adhesive chemistry, coating weight, dwell time, temperature, pressure, and storage conditions can all affect the relationship between the adhesive and the release liner.
The converter tested the proposed release liner through its normal production sequence. Particular attention was given to how securely the release liner remained attached during converting and how smoothly it could be removed during the final application stage.
The results showed that the Fox River Associates recommended release liner provided the controlled release characteristics the customer was seeking. It remained attached during the stages where protection was necessary, while requiring less force to remove when the component was ready for use.
The Solution and Outcome
Following successful testing, the converter moved forward with the recommended release liner specification. The new release liner created a more predictable removal experience and reduced the amount of force required during application.
For the new Fox River Associates customer, the outcome was not simply about making the release liner easier to peel. It was about establishing a release profile that better matched how the construction component was manufactured, protected, transported, and ultimately installed.
The project reinforced several important principles that apply to release liners used in construction and building products. Release level should be matched carefully to the adhesive system. Release liner strength and stiffness must suit the converting process. Material performance should be evaluated under realistic conditions, and any change should account for the complete life cycle of the component.
At Fox River Associates, our role as a release liner supplier goes beyond providing material. We help customers evaluate the variables that can influence release liner performance and identify specifications that better support the intended application.
Whether a manufacturer is developing a new adhesive-backed construction component or troubleshooting an existing material, we can help review release characteristics, substrates, coatings, and other relevant requirements while keeping the application confidential. From the initial concern through the delivery of an effective release liner solution, Fox River Associates brings professionalism, experience, and proven problem-solving expertise to every challenge.
